They’re the highest leapers on campus- literally. The Orchesis Dance Company includes some of Southern California’s most talented hip-hop, jazz and modern dancers.
Although the junior and senior dance group may be slightly smaller than other performing arts groups, it doesn’t stop the group from performing their very best. “It’s a dance company,” Amy Teng says, “Not a dance class. We don’t learn how to dance, but learn how to perform, how to take care of our bodies.”
Currently, the dance company is working on their charity show, which will be performed Tuesday, December 17th in the north gym. The amount of money that the charity show pools in will be donated to the Care Organization, and will help feed and eliminate local poverty all over Southern California. As revealed by Tyler Reeves, Orchesis will be performing ‘Merry Happy,’ a quirky, modern routine choreographed by Marissa Tom and Heidy Lam, ‘Wait it Out,’ a strong lyrical routine choreographed by Meghan Lim and Celine Yueh as well as Shake and Pop a sassy, fun Jazz dance choreographed by Katreina Layfield and Kristin Kimura. Orchesis will also be performing Earth Intruders from the homecoming assembly, and a holiday routine that has yet to be announced.
The ROP class, all songs in the charity show are student-choreographed, and every dancer must audition to be in a song, simulating true-to-life situations as a professional dancer. The class doesn’t focus on techniques, “the class focuses more about the performing arts within dance,” Wendy Wu says. The Orchesis Dance Company is filled with students planning on keeping dancing as a permanent part of their daily life, most of the members having more than eight to nine years of dancing experience.
The Orchesis Dance Company is a strong group of talented dancers, many taking separate dance classes outside Orchesis. Their Charity show is bound to be fun and exciting, so make sure to reserve the date this December 17th.
