    Art Murals Empty Art Murals

    Art Honors Murals Article:
    Breathing Life into AHS Hallways
    Freedom of Artistic Expression
    Beautifying AHS
    Breathtaking Murals Gracing AHS Hallways

By Debbie Jong and Esther Lin

First started by an art teacher some 20 years ago, the rich tradition of beautifying AHS hallways with student murals has since been passed down to Ms. Georgette Tuttle. However, she lost access to seven murals when the recent construction demolished hallways in the East Wing, so now there are only 12 murals left. Because of this shortage, each mural will only be able to stand in all its glory for about one year before it will be painted over by the next generation of Art Honors students.

Every year, Ms. Tuttle’s Art Honors students have the privilege of expressing their ideas artistically in a full-blown 6 feet by 28 feet mural. Since mural availability is limited—not nearly enough for every student in the class—students in Art Honors are first given small panels on which they are to submit a design. The classes vote for the top six designs. Throughout the school year, the select artists work diligently on their respective murals during their class period, perfecting every little detail so that the overall piece is filled with many heartfelt intricacies.

Coming from the minds of students among us, these murals exemplify the wide variety of thought and ideas in the school, ranging from creative underwater scenes to portrayals of school halls. [this can be omitted if the article is too long] This year’s new murals will be painted by Janet Chan, Cherry Mo, Tiffany Chu, Jocelin Trinh, Nancy Shen, Emily Khuu, Sara Walter, and Austin Ho.

Senior Janet Chan titled her mural “Class of 2010” as a celebratory piece for this year’s seniors. She was inspired by the “grungy style” of graffiti artist Banksy. Originally motivated by the aspect of school graffiti, something that is usually frowned upon, Janet understands that though graffiti is usually taken in bad context, “some graffiti artists are very talented and it’s a shame that what they do is illegal."

Hoping to “bring life to the school halls,” seniors Tiffany Chu and Jocelin Trinh worked together to design their colorful, lively mural entitled “Live.” The mural depicts a variety of colors, lines, and shapes, which all combine to “form the different colors of life,” Tiffany explained.

For junior Cherry Mo, inspiration for her mural struck "randomly" as she was searching for images online and stumbled upon an adorable picture of a bulldog with its tongue hanging out. She wants to convey the same "fun and spontaneity" through her artwork featuring animals packed in a car, tongues lolling out, attempting to escape from the zoo.

Senior Sara Walter is painting "The Sea," and seniors Nancy Shen and Austin Ho are collaborating on their mural entitled "Bridge." [no info from them yet...]

Hoping to create a piece that inspires different interpretations, senior Emily Khuu designed a mural featuring abstract images on the right side and calm images of sunsets and bamboos on the left. "The left side is more of deep colors and the right side is more of vibrant colors," Emily explained, "so I think it offsets each other pretty well."

For many of the student artists, “painting [our] ideas on a wall this big is not something that [we] can do all the time,” Cherry noted appreciatively. “This might even be a once in a lifetime experience."
