Arcadia’s Best Place to Raise Kids Award
The prestigious Breeder’s Cup has just been held at the Santa Anita Racetrack for the second time in a row. AHS’s sports teams continuously rank nationally in games and meets. Arcadia’s schools consistently perform well over the standards set by the nation. The Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Gardens is right next door, a tranquil escape from the franticness of life. What’s not to like in this city? Those above reasons and many more are why Arcadia was named, for the second consecutive year, the Best Place to Raise Kids in California by BusinessWeek magazine.
In order to be considered for this reputable title, the city has to meet certain criteria. The standard that was weighted most heavily in this year’s selection process was the overall costs of living, including median household incomes and average market prices. In addition to this factor, other essential aspects of life, including crime rates, job growth, and schools were taken into careful consideration. Crime levels in Arcadia are nearly nonexistent, and it’s a no-brainer to realize that Arcadia schools excel in the academic portion, constantly beating the national average scores on all tests. Finer elements of living, including theaters, restaurants, parks, and cultural diversity, were regarded as well. Arcadia is one of the most culturally diverse cities, with Italian restaurants competing with the Asian buffet next door, and Chinese New Year festivals and Thanksgiving feasts held annually. Additionally, Arcadia is home to not only one highly regarded locale, the Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Gardens, well known for its astounding scenery and breathtaking backdrop of the San Gabriel Mountains, but also another famous venue, the Santa Anita Racetrack, famous for its horse races that draw international crowds.
However, it is the pride and joy Arcadians take in their city that makes Arcadia one of the best places to live. Freshman Kerry Wang says that “Arcadia is unique in its diverse attractions, like the racetrack and the Arboretum.” Others, like freshman Jollin Lai, take pride in “our excellent education [systems] and the convenience of being able to go to all different places, just in one city- the mall, the supermarkets, the bowling lanes, anything.” That must be the most important factor- pure and unadulterated pride and joy in one’s own city. Congratulations, Arcadia!
