Carbon Tax
By: Justin Park
With the carbon dioxide emissions from cars circulating around the globe, more countries have chosen to deviate towards carbon taxes in order to curb tasks involving large quantities of carbon. In the bigger picture, carbon, or CO2 taxes, are used to lower the usage of burning fossil fuels. The logic behind countries issuing carbon taxes is sound because the layers of CO2 already in the Earth's atmosphere continually threaten delicately balanced ecosystems that multitudinous amounts of organisms are dependent on.
The carbon tax doesn't aim to take out the carbon in goods but rather it aspires to depress the routine of burning fossil fuels. "We could start off with just the real energy-intensive products." said Dieter Helm, an economist and professor of energy policy. The carbon tax would start out by taxing only the intensively polluting factors, general transportation, aviation, and even shipping would be taxed for the carbon content in the fuel they use. As most know, during each space launch, tons and tons of exhaust and fumes are poured into the atmosphere, to be specific, each space launch consumes 3.5 million pounds of fuel; this would obviously cause the ozone to deteriorate much faster. However, the space launches don't occur as often as they used to in the 20th century, but this is to no avail as the United States alone use 2,500 million pounds of fuel per day. The ozone will fail if this reckless fuel usage continues, that is the reason why many environmentalists and even the common people are rising up to promote anti-pollution and recently, the carbon tax.
Carbon dioxide, the most feared greenhouse gas. Why? Because every day, billions of pounds of this gas is being released into the air, many believe that because of the colossal amounts of carbon dioxide in the air, Earth could experience a global climate shift harming our environment. Toxic pollutants, greenhouses gases, and any other non-natural phenomena can greatly overwhelm the easily interruptible ecosystem. The decline of healthy ecosystems could lead to a large chain of events including the decreasing of forests and the extinction of species.
The only mattering fact to political parties on whether to pass the carbon tax or not is the question, 'Is everyone else doing it?'. Quite a few countries have gone down the road leading to the carbon tax, in Europe alone, Finland, Sweden, and Ireland have chosen to resort to the tariff to reduce the possibility of a drastic climate distortion. According to Dieter Helm, enforcing a carbon tax in America is politically possible, he also mentioned that it isn't the production of carbon that worries him, it's the consumption of it.
The benefits of having a carbon tax are numerous and the reason for administering it is sensible. It would lower the greenhouse gas emission first of all. Also, in order to avoid larger fees due to taxes, individuals could possibly switch from individual transport to public transport and regular light bulbs to fluorescent light bulbs. Over a long period of time, a country using the carbon tax could completely transform into an environmentalist and conservative community which would directly aid the dire situation that the Earth is vulnerable to because of the continual exposure to harmful greenhouse gases.
