If one of your new year's resolution included being able to enjoy an appetizing spaghetti dinner and receiving performances from some of AHS' performing groups at an affordable price , then there was no need to look any further. The 2009 Spaghetti Dinner performance at the AHS Cafeteria and North Gym featured a multitude of Marching Band, Colorguard, and Percussion talents that dazzled the audience.
Starting from ___, members of AHS Marching Band, Colorguard, and Percussion were seen around campus, advertising sales for tickets to the Spaghetti Dinner. For only $8, students were given the opportunity to catch a performance on Saturday, Jan. 16 from 4:00 pm- 10:30 pm. Upon initially arriving and presenting their Spaghetti Dinner ticket for admission, students were ushered into the AHS Cafeteria to receive their serving of spaghetti. Following afterwards, audience members then arrived in the North Gym to catch any one of the three shows, at 5:00, 7:00, and 9:00 respectively.
All three performing groups blew the audience away with their individual performances. Members of band proudly presented their performance, which consisted of songs like "Star Spangled Banner", "Shine Down"," Can You Feel the Love Tonight", "Wonderful One", "Rifle Regiment" and their field show with their Opener, Toxins, Spices, and Perfumers, and Closer. Senior Band member Mandy Chan remarked on how excited she was to perform the field show music because "it's been a while since we've performed the show" and "playing the music makes [her] nostalgic, thinking about the season and how it will be unforgettable." A slideshow filled with pictures of this past season will be played as Band performs "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" in the background. Other than performing a duet on trumpet and French Horn for field show, senior Pep Band leaders Casey Young and Michael Kallin also led Pep Band in an additional performance of Michael Jackson's "Thriller". Along with their field show performance with Band, Percussion also premiered a glimpse into their 2010 indoor show, "Legend". Using rifles, sabers, dance, and swing flag, Colorguard impressed with their field show performance.
Wednesday, Jan. 13, marked the official Spaghetti Dinner rehearsal for all the Spaghetti Dinner performers. From 6-9 pm, every performer was perfecting and polishing their finalized performances in the North Gym. On top of this, each performing group also dutifully practiced accordingly; dedicated Colorguard members rehearses during their class periods to make their performance flawless. Percussion practice schedules include Mondays from 3-6 pm, Wednesday, lasting from 5-9 pm, and 3-4:30 pm on Fridays. Band devotes much of their time prepping the Spaghetti Dinner music and drill downs. As a result of their numerous practices, senior Colorguard captain Katherine Chin is extremely glad that they all "had an opportunity to perform the shows and routines that we have been working on in the fall season indoors where our family and friends [were] able to witness all the hard work that we have invested."
To many seniors, Spaghetti Dinner is representative of the end of their AHS Band, Colorguard, or Percussion career. According to Casey, Spaghetti Dinner is a time "of celebrating the end of the season, reflecting on our achievements... [and] also a time for our friends and family to see our final product after a season of hardwork and progress from the start of summer." Senior Band historian Felicia Choi recalled this season as "very long and memorable" and looked forward to "ending this season strong with this final performance." Jessica Chee, Colorguard squad leader, also reflects upon her feelings saying how "this [was] my last Spaghetti Dinner, [I had hoped to] end the field show season strong [with] a perfect performance." Reflecting positively on her last performance, senior Colorguard squad leader Janice Eo "just [wanted to] have fun and show what [she's] been working on."
With the last performance behind their backs, the senior performers now pass the reins on to the lower classmen. With a new season budding with the new year, we can only anticipate what new performances will be doled out in the future.
