Whenever we see the amazing plays performed by Advanced Drama Department (ADD), Theater II, or any theater class in general, we don’t usually think about the one who is responsible for putting the whole show together—the sole ringleader behind these performances. Not enough credit is given to Mr. Steven Volpe, drama teacher extraordinaire for his achievements, so it is time to give Mr. Volpe his turn in the spotlight.
Before teaching at AHS, Mr. Volpe was a professional actor who appeared in various TV shows, films, musical theaters, and plays. Amongst his impressive performances, Mr. Volpe appeared even in TV shows such as “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”, “Las Vegas”, and “Will and Grace”. Mr. Volpe says that he has “always been interested in theatre arts since a young age. This is a career he knew he wanted to get into since middle school.” His early interest in drama convinced Mr. Volpe to aim towards the path of becoming an instructor of theater.
Mr. Volpe majored in both theater arts and English and spent two years teaching English literature before moving on to drama. AHS is where Mr. Volpe received his very first teaching job; a new performing arts center was being built, and Mr. Volpe was invited by the principal to start a dynamic drama program. While still attending college, Mr. Volpe worked as a substitute teacher for AHS for three years. He says that the different interactions with the students “helped shape path of becoming teacher.”
Mr. Volpe feels that his responsibilities as a drama teacher includes inspiring “creativity, organizational skills, performance, technique, etiquette” within students. Mr. Volpe feels that organization is an exceptionally “major factor [of drama because of the] rehearsal schedules involved.” He juggles five different drama related classes, consisting of two periods of Theater I, one period of intermediate drama and ADD, and one stagecraft class. Learning how to build sets and props create costumes, making posters, increasing publicity, and properly work lighting—these are just some elements that students touch upon in Mr. Volpe’s drama classes. Mr. Volpe sees it “rewarding to share [the] gift of art with students and to help them, guide them, and see their own interpretations.” He strives to really take each year’s drama classes to the next level as he “make[s] it bigger and bigger with...[larger] sets, different projects...[it promotes] more student interest in drama every year.”
Not only does he does he help students achieve their full theater potential but he also patiently teaches them all the various aspects of theater. All his effort, passion, and dedication are put solely into what he loves the most—teaching theater arts.
