    Student Profile: Olivia Sui

You may have seen her face somewhere before. That girl in the Sprint commercial? Or that pretty Korean teenager in CSI? Where have you seen her before? Right here at AHS!

Junior Olivia Sui is a budding actress. Over the past few years, she has played several small roles in TV series, a movie, and a commercial. In 2005, she was cast as Pirate Girl on the set of “Monk." She took on the role of Peggy in an episode of “Weeds” that same year. More recently, she appeared in CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, directed by Richard J. Lewis, playing a Korean teenager in the “Say Uncle” episode. She acted as Agent Smith in the 2009 film “A Trivial Exclusion,” directed by Grant Sui Wonders, Jackson Sui, and Clark Sui Wonders.

When she's not acting, Olivia busies herself with Speech and Debate, Orchesis, and ballet.

    UPDATED NEW INFO

    Student Profile: Olivia Sui

You may have seen her face somewhere before. Is she that girl in the Sprint commercial? Or that Korean teenager in CSI? But where else have you seen her before? Right here at AHS.

Junior Olivia Sui is an aspiring actress. She started acting when she was little, back when she was still “very, very shy.” Listening to Radio Disney one day, Olivia heard a commercial about auditions for an acting school, “John Robert Powers,” and decided to try out just for fun.

Since then, Olivia has landed several acting jobs and is currently represented by Buchwald Talent Group. In 2005, she was cast as Pirate Girl for the TV series “Monk,” and acted as Peggy in another TV show called “Weeds.” More recently, she appeared on "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation," playing a Korean teenager. She has worked with award-winning actors such as Tony Shaloub, William Peterson, Mary Louise Parker, Alli Grant, Lev Spiro, and Richard J. Lewis.

Olivia isn’t exactly sure why she loves acting. “Maybe I’m still discovering myself, so putting myself in another person’s perspective is really interesting,” she mused. However, acting is a tough career because “you get rejected a lot more than you are accepted,” she explained. Many times, Olivia would receive numerous call backs, but doesn't land the part in the end.

To prepare for her roles, Olivia first “cold reads” her lines, analyzes the scene, and then decides how she should best react to the scenario. On the days of filming, Olivia arrives at the site and hurries into her little trailer or room to prepare her wardrobe and makeup. Then she runs through the lines and shoots a scene over and over again. Since she’s a minor, Olivia has to take routine breaks during the filming process. Afterward, Olivia mingles [with whom?] or studies with her onset tutor. Of course, [the crew?] keeps the actors and actresses well-cared-for on the set, armed with a stock of medicine, vitamins, energy boosters, toothpaste, toothbrushes, and delicious food.

At school, Olivia is involved in the Speech and Debate team and Orchesis. During her free time, she enjoys ballet, shopping, and watching “The Office.”

In the future, Olivia hopes to become a successful actress, using her “voice and power to help out people in need,” she said. However, since acting is such a narrow field, she is also considering majoring in Public Relations or Political Science. Olivia hopes to attend a college with a strong public relations, political science, and theatre program.

    Student Profile: Olivia Sui

Junior Olivia Sui started acting when she was 11, back when she was still “very, very shy.” Listening to Radio Disney one day, she heard a commercial about auditions for an acting school called John Robert Powers and decided to audition just for fun. She was accepted by the school and enrolled in a ten-week session. Every Saturday, real agencies and TV shows held auditions there and Olivia prepared monologues in hopes of landing a role.

Olivia was discovered by Bonnie Liedtke, an agent who represents actors such as Zac Efron, Taylor Lautner, and Leonardo DiCaprio. When Liedkte moved to the William Morris Agency in May 2007, she asked Olivia to move with her, too; however, Olivia was still very young, so she had to decline the offer.

Since then, Olivia has landed several acting jobs and is currently represented by Pamela Fisher from Don Buchwald & Associates, Inc. In 2005, Olivia was cast as Pirate Girl for the TV series “Monk,” and played Peggy in another series called “Weeds.” More recently, she appeared on “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation,” playing a Korean teenager. Over the years, she has had the opportunity to work with award-winning actors such as Tony Shalhoub and William Petersen, actresses Mary-Louise Parker and Allie Grant, and directors Lev L. Spiro and Richard J. Lewis.

Olivia isn’t exactly sure why she loves acting. “Maybe I’m still discovering myself, so putting myself in another person’s perspective is really interesting,” she mused. However, acting is a tough career because “you get rejected a lot more than you are accepted,” Olivia explained. Many times, she received numerous call-backs, but didn't get the part in the end.

On the days of filming, Olivia arrives at the site and hurries into her little trailer or room to prepare her wardrobe and makeup. Then she runs through the lines and shoots a scene over and over again. She admits that so many repetitions can get tiresome, but strives to “cherish every moment of it.” Since she’s a minor, Olivia has to take routine breaks between different shoots and is always accompanied by her mom.

Other than acting, Olivia is also involved in Speech and Debate and Orchesis at school, and has been dancing at Li’s Dance Studio for 11 years. During her free time, Olivia enjoys hanging out with her friends, shopping, and watching “The Office.”

In the future, Olivia hopes to become a successful actress, using her “voice and power to help out people in need,” she said. However, since acting is a competitive field, she is also considering majoring in Public Relations or Political Science. Lewis, her director in CSI, cautioned Olivia against attending a theatre school because “normal daily life is the most natural acting.” His lifelong advice to her was to “be yourself and be happy.”

On the days of filming, Olivia arrives at the location and hurries into her little trailer or room to prepare her makeup and wardrobe. Then she runs through the lines before shooting begins. When the cameras start rolling, “I’m like the character in the scene, but at the same time, I’m still myself,” Olivia explained. “It’s just me in a different setting.” Each scene is shot multiple times, but Olivia has to take routine breaks between shoots because she’s a minor. Sometimes, when a scene is shot in an open area, passerbyers stop to watch. “Even if I’m not the star of the show, that feeling—even if for a couple of seconds—really blows your mind,” Olivia said, “You’re so not in your comfort zone and forget about everything else.”

Olivia feels incredibly “blessed and lucky” to have had the opportunity to become an actress. However, she noted that no matter how much talent or ability a person has, they “always need a little bit of luck” to be discovered. She credits her mom for “never holding [her] back and always encouraging [her],” often driving her long distances to auditions that may only last five minutes.

Aside from acting, Olivia is involved in Speech and Debate and Orchesis at school, and has been dancing at Li’s Dance Studio in Temple City for 11 years. During her free time, Olivia enjoys shopping, hanging out with her friends, and watching “The Office.”

Perhaps most importantly, she has noticed a huge change in her personality over the past few years. In elementary school, Olivia used to be “the shiest person you ever met,” but her acting experiences over the years have definitely shaped her into the outgoing and fun-loving person that she is today.
