Two Temple City figures—former Mayor Judy Wong (now a councilwoman) and former Mayor Cathe Wilson—have been accused of wrongdoing by a developer, Randy Wang, who claims that these two officials demanded bribes of him in exchange for their cooperation to move a long delayed $75 million building project forward.
Wong is faced with 10 felony charges including bribery and perjury, all of which she pleaded not guilty to, and a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison. Wilson has also pleaded not guilty to all accusations. Sophomore Amy Wang said, “[They] gave into [greed]… Supposed ‘leaders’ like [them] simply make the government more corrupted [and] in the end people lose faith in the integrity of their leaders.”
In addition to being a councilwoman, Wong had previously volunteered herself to be the adviser to the city’s new Youth Committee. This newly formed committee consists of 13 Temple City middle school and high school students and allows the students a chance to get involved in city politics by offering their input to student-related council discussions. “It's a big disappointment to the youth group,” Amy said. “Depending on the kids themselves, some may be influenced to think doing the easy thing is the right thing, and others may have simply lost respect for people in government positions.”
