    Gina Oh Article
    By Rhiannon Yee

Sophomore Gina Oh has a big mouth; one that she intends to change the world with. Gina, along with many other high school students from all parts of Southern California, is a participant in the Global Debates program of the UN Foundation. These students collaborate not only to argue topics of global issues such as poverty and climate change, but also to put actions behind their words and actively participate in their communities in the fight against climate change. The debates usually consist of audiences with various leaders and officials of organizations, other students, and any member of the community interested in the global issues. With many organizations such as PAVA, Green LA Coalition, and Heal the Bay, these students are aiming to make a difference through researching, debating, and reaching out to help the community.

Gina, a member of AHS’s Speech and Debate Team, first heard about this debate from New Hope Academy, a local debate academy. She was excited to join this cause because it gives “regular high school students an opportunity to share and voice their opinions to leaders and officials”. Along with improving her speaking skills, Gina has “learned more about the dire situation of climate change and poverty and little ways to help, such as recycling, reusing, and conserving”. In this special debate students not only get to argue their topic but also get to actually make a difference in their communities. Gina really appreciates this because it is a great “opportunity for [her] to take action for what [she says] rather than just saying it…with this group, [she] not only assert[s] [her] thoughts through words but also by action through community service projects”. Gina and her team are always trying to raise awareness for their cause, even going on beach cleaning excursions and giving out free recyclable ornaments to promote a greener Christmas at the Americana Mall this past Christmas.

With any luck, Gina and her team will be taking the prize trip to the Netherlands if they earn enough points. Along the way, Gina has made new friends from many different schools, learned valuable ways to contribute to her community, and more importantly, how to help make the world greener a little bit at a time. She hopes that “everyone will learn something the serious issues our world faces and will participate in helping to save it”.

    Edited for content.

Sophomore Gina Oh has a big mouth [Is Gina okay with you saying this? Haha. Let her read over this whole article for fact checking]; one that she intends to change the world with. Gina, along with many other high school students from all parts of Southern California, is a participant in the Global Debates program of the UN Foundation [write out whole name]. These students collaborate not only to argue topics of global issues such as poverty and climate change, but also to put actions behind their words and actively participate in their communities in the fight against climate change. The debates usually consist of audiences with various leaders and officials of organizations, other students, and any member[s] of the community interested in the global issues. With many organizations such as PAVA [write out the whole name since this the first time you mention it], Green LA Coalition, and Heal the Bay, these students are aiming to make a difference through researching, debating, and reaching out to help the community.

Gina, a member of AHS’s Speech and Debate Team, first heard about this debate [add "program" to clarify?] from New Hope Academy, a local debate academy [use a different word. "Academy" is repetitive]. With any luck, Gina and her team will be taking the prize trip to the Netherlands if they earn enough points [clarify point system]. Along the way, Gina has made new friends from many different schools, learned valuable ways to contribute to her community, and more importantly, how to help make the world greener a little bit at a time. She hopes that “everyone will learn something the serious issues our world faces and will participate in helping to save it”.

Hey Rhiannon, so as of now the article makes what Gina does seem really .. regular. We think you should emphasize how "global" this activity really is. Emphasize how the UN reaches out through this program (look up the UN website for this program). Include a bit more info (e.g., over 80 countries participate in this). Overall just play up how international this is. Make it seem more important.
