Quiz Bowl - Baby Anteater Empty Quiz Bowl - Baby Anteater

This is basically done, I think. I may put in another paragraph after Feb. 13, but that depends on whether anything remarkable actually happens or not.

The new semester has barely begun, but there’s no time for breaks in Quiz Bowl! While others may have been relaxing after the pressure of finals, the members of Quiz Bowl dove right into preparing for the busy month of February. Within the space of one month alone, Quiz Bowl competed at UC Irvine’s Baby Anteater XI, hosted their own tournament on Feb. 13, and will soon be going to Rocket Surgery at La Jolla High School.

On Saturday, Jan. 30, three teams of Quiz Bowl members set out for UC Irvine to compete in their annual Baby Anteater XI, with high hopes for their team. Baby Anteater is a novice tournament, where all the competitors had only been in Quiz Bowl for two years or less. This year, Quiz Bowl has an unusually high number of novices – fifteen out of their nineteen members have been on the team for less than two years. Despite this relative lack of experience, AHS has traditionally done well at past Baby Anteater tournaments, due to their effective practice techniques and genuine love for Quiz Bowl. “We had very high expectations for ourselves, because it’s all material that we already know, and we’ve generally done well at Baby Anteater,” said one of the captains, senior Stanley Yuan.

AHS did not disappoint. By lunch that day, both B Team and C Team remained undefeated, while A Team had suffered only one narrow loss to University A. This meant that all three teams had qualified for the top brackets, and had equal opportunity to win first place, since all records from before lunch were disregarded. As the day went on, C Team snagged 6th place, while B Team won 5th, but the main excitement came down to the tiebreaker match between AHS’s A Team and University A. Although University A had already defeated AHS twice before – once before lunch, and once after – their unexpected loss to La Jolla put the teams tied at one loss each.

Buzz after buzz rang through the auditorium. University A put up an excellent fight, but the third time proved to be the charm when, after twenty questions, the score stood at 385-275, with AHS winning the tournament by 110 points. “I never realized how fun answering random questions about random topics could be,” commented sophomore Carl Tso of the whole experience. “It feels very good to finally win first place – hard work does pay off,” agreed senior Alex Hu, co-captain of Quiz Bowl, who also placed third in the individual standings.

Quiz Bowl didn’t spend too much time celebrating their win, however – they had to start preparing for their own tournament, the Arcadia Carnal Embrace, held right here at AHS on Feb. 13. As hosts, AHS could not compete against anyone, but members still got some valuable practice at reading questions and moderating rounds, both excellent ways of preparing for competition.

So far, February has been a rather successful month for Quiz Bowl. Hopefully, they will be able to keep up the good work at their next actual tournament, La Jolla High School’s Rocket Surgery, on Feb. 27. We wish them the best of luck.
