    Sadies 2010

Post  debbiejong on Tue Feb 02, 2010 11:43 pm

Ladies—lasso up your date before it’s too late! Junior Council and Prom Committee have been working tirelessly to plan and prepare for the 2010 Sadie Hawkins Dance (Sadies) set for Mar. 20. The two groups approached the theme decision differently this year: instead of discussing and selecting a theme amongst themselves like in previous years, they announced three possible themes and let the students ultimately decide. Junior Boys’ Relations Alan Zhu explained that this process “eliminates most discontent the school has with us [Junior Council] picking the theme.”

Each member of Junior Council has a specific task. Junior President Jonathan Ma supervises and directs work outside of Prom Committee, and Senator Winnie Hui is the leader of Prom Committee. Vice President Patrick Han brainstorms spirit activities and bonding events, while Secretary Evelyn Park takes minutes for both the meetings. Girls’ Relations and Boys’ Relations, Anne Wu and Alan respectively, manage the publicity, advertising Sadies through the student bulletin, APN, Facebook, Twitter, and Youtube. This is to ensure that “everyone sees what we’re doing and [we can] take in their input to make all of our events, primarily Sadies, better,” said Alan. Prom Committee plays a crucial role in the planning process, and the __ members help Junior Council with the immense workload that would be practically impossible for only seven people, such as making posters, discussing theme details, and advertising.

Jonathan hopes for a turnout of 800 people or more, which is almost twice as much as last year’s. However, Alan proudly stated that the members of Junior Council work extremely well together, and they "aren't afraid to break records." The money Junior Council raises from Sadies will be used to fund our Prom, which Alan promises will be “extremely epic this year.”

On Feb. 5, students participated in the first-ever Sadies theme elections under the pavilion, either before school or during lunch, choosing from among the themes “The Original Sadies Hawkins,” “Dance for the Decades,” and “Animation Domination.” [include relevant details, if any, about voting day here]

Junior Council [and Prom Committee?] revealed the winning theme on Feb. 11, “_____.” [include details on the winning theme here]

As Mar. 20 draws ever closer, Junior Council and Prom Committee are busy planning out every last detail: pictures, DJs, lights, refreshments, security, chaperones, music and decorations.

Alan welcomed any student with song or other requests for this year's Sadies to "mention ahs2010sadies on twitter or send us a direct message, because everything will be taken into consideration,” he said. [All my quotes are from Alan because he was the only one I emailed who replied. I'll try to get replies from the other members of Junior Council, and maybe some Prom Committee members too.]

The following week, on Feb. 11, Junior Council assembled on the Rally Court during lunch after performances from Pep Band and the Arcadia B-Boys. Junior Council members unfurled two large scrolls, each attached to a colorful festival of balloons, reminiscent of those from the Pixar film, Up. Emblazoned in bold letters on the scrolls was this year's student-elected Sadies theme: "Animation Domination."

"Everyone sees what we’re doing and [we can] take in their input to make all of our events, primarily Sadies, better,” said Alan. Prom Committee plays an integral role in the planning process, and the 21 members help Junior Council with the immense workload that would be practically impossible for only seven people to complete. [if you need to cut stuff, you can take out the parts about each Council member's task^]

Jonathan hopes for a turnout of 800 people or more, which is almost twice as much as last year’s. However, Alan proudly stated that the members of Junior Council work extremely well together, and they "aren't afraid to break records." The following week, on Feb. 11, Junior Council members assembled on the Rally Court during lunch to reveal this year's student-elected theme. They unfurled two large scrolls, each attached to a colorful festival of balloons reminiscent of the Pixar film Up. Emblazoned in bold letters on the scrolls were the words "Animation Domination." The crowd cheered and welcomed this theme with delight, awed by the dramatic display.

The freedom and creativity that "Animation Domination" allows make it particularly appealing, and attendees can dress up as animated characters from movies, cartoons, comics, and so forth. The color scheme of the dance will be the rainbow to reflect the colorful nature of cartoons. There are endless possibilities for costumes: girls can dress up as Disney characters and princesses, Sailor Moon characters, or women from the Justice League. Guys can dress up as Garfield, superheroes, or Pokémon and Digimon characters. More suggestions include characters from Cartoon Network, anime, Nickelodeon, Looney Tunes, Dreamworks, Pixar, comics, and any other kind of cartoon or animation you can think of.

Alan welcomed any student with song or other requests for this year's Sadies to mention ahs2010sadies on twitter or send Junior Council a direct message, because they will take everything into consideration. From the innovative theme elections to the creative big reveal, it's clear that this year's Sadies will be "off the pages"!
