The crime rate in Arcadia is relatively low when compared to the rest of California. Therefore, it was surprising when three strong-arm robberies occurred at the 99 Ranch Market, one on Jan. 20, another on Jan. 22, and the last on Jan. 27.
Strong-arm robberies can be incredibly dangerous because, usually, a group of people quickly assault the target with a lot of brute force. These robbers are quick and efficient with just the needed amount of threatening and violence to get what they want.
In the first robbery on Jan. 20, two men pushed a woman, who was carrying groceries to her car, to the ground. Following up on their actions, they kicked her in the face and snatched her purse before driving off quickly. Fortunately, the woman’s purse was discovered, but all the case and her cell phone was missing. During the second robbery on Jan. 22, a different woman was strolling in the parking lot, when a burgundy sedan pulled up next to her. A male passenger leaned out of the car and grabbed the woman’s purse and the driver drove off quickly. In the final robbery on Jan. 27, the purse of a woman was also grabbed, but this time the woman held on. She was dragged for 30 feet before releasing her purse. Luckily, all three of this women suffered only minor injuries.
Due to these recent robberies, Arcadians have been concerned for their well-being of their possessions and themselves. Some basic tips that can help prevent and escape from robberies is to be aware, give up the possession, and create a scene. Being aware of the surrounding area is helpful especially when a suspicious person approaches. Since possessions can be replaced, they should be given up in case of any danger to your life. Creating a scene works wonders when it comes to scaring off the robber and attracting attention towards you.
Although the continuous robberies frightened Arcadians, they increased the awareness of any robbers. Hopefully, the new vigilance will deter any possible robberies in the future.
