Splish! Splash! You here them bright and early in the morning, yet you never question their absurdness for: a) swimming in such cold weather and b) being able to even get out of bed knowing that their morning will be soaked with exhaustion so early in the day. The Boys and Girls Varsity Swim teams have been doing exceptionally well this season as they defeat all of their opponents with flying colors.

Both teams went to Los Altos on Mar. 3 for their first non-league meet. Excitement was in the air as they wanted to prove to all of their competitors early that AHS is a school to look out for this season. When the guys and the girls approached this meet with confidence, their hard work all winter paid off when the girls won 122-38 while the guys won 125-45. Their bus ride home was filled with smiles as both teams left Los Altos with smiles and pride.

Their second non-league meet was against Polytechnic on Mar. 5. Both teams hoped to continue their winning streak as they exercised even harder and prepared for the difficulties yet to come. Senior Samantha Winthein said, “The only way to prepare for our meets is to get in everyday and practice, practice, practice!” Luckily, both teams won once again with scores of _____.

Splish! Splash! You here them bright and early in the morning, yet you never question their absurdness for: a) swimming in such cold weather and b) being able to even get out of bed knowing that their morning will be soaked with exhaustion. The Boys and Girls Varsity Swim teams have been doing exceptionally well this season as they defeated all of their opponents with flying colors with an overall score of 3-0 for both the boys and the girls.

Their bus ride home was filled with relief as both teams left Los Altos with smiles and pride

Their second non-league meet was against Pasadena Polytechnic on Mar. 5. Both teams hoped to continue their winning streak as they exercised even harder and prepared for the difficulties yet to come. Senior Samantha Winthein said, “The only way to prepare for our meets is to get in everyday and practice, practice, practice!” Luckily, both teams won once again with scores of 118-40 for the girls and 115-28 for the boys.

As the teams’ winning streak boosted up all of their energy, they traveled to Los Amigos for their Coed Relay Invitational on Mar. 13 with certainty. Their practices seem to be paying off because both teams had extremely high scores at the end. Swim coach Ms. Janice Clark commented, “We are working hard on building strength and endurance and going over stroke technique, starts, and turns—especially with the newer swimmers.” In the end, the boys scored 125-40 while the girls scored 122-38, placing 3rd overall out of 24 other teams. On Mar. 17, both teams had another swim meet against Monrovia and scored _____.

One hurdle the teams must overcome is the fact that they have had numerous disqualifications at their meets so early in the season. Sophomore Yujiro Goto said, “We have to work hard on not to be disqualified by showing up on time to swim, swim legal, and etc.” Also, many of the teams’ most prominent players graduated last year, putting a lot of pressure on the numerous underclassmen and their raw talent. “The team is still trying to achieve the level of cohesion that has characterized swim for the past few years,” said junior Ray Chao.

“I always know people who look down on swimming as not a real sport and swimmers as people who swim because they can't play a "real" sport. But I’ve gone to other sport practices. I can run like them, do their drills, and keep up with them in most of their practice but I challenge people to go to a swim practice and try to keep up. Most of them cannot,” explained senior Susan Thant.

The boys had an invitational at Millikan, which did not end up as prominent as they had hoped. Since two of their best players were not able to attend, their motivation just wasn’t present at the meet, prompting their swimming to be a tad off. Sadly, the team was immensely defeated.

In effect, the team did not qualify for the finals which was where points were given out; therefore, they were not scored for this meet.
