Fireworks over Lake Oswego, viewing one of the Seven Wonders of the World, and walking from the Spanish Steps to the Trevi Fountain are a few memorable moments experienced by Arcadia High School students. The summer of 2009 was full of fun times with family and friends and for some, traveling to exotic destinations. Several students have been kind enough to give us a glimpse into their summer travels.

    FRESHMAN
    Cancun, Mexico

If I could choose to visit one place in the world again, I would definitely choose Cancun, Mexico. I have never been to Mexico and one of the things I will remember most about Cancun is the beaches. They are just absolutely gorgeous, with pristine white sand and beautiful, clear blue ocean water. The stores along the coast have everything you could possibly imagine ranging from exquisite silver to exotic souvenirs, with everything else in between. My family and I visited the Chichen Itza pyramid which was incredible because Chichen Itza is one of the Seven Wonders of the World and it was the first time I’d ever seen one of the “Wonders”. In addition to the historical sites I visited, I also had the chance to participate in many traditional events and absorb the culture of the Cancun people. Cancun is the most beautiful, fascinating place I have ever been in my life and my trip was an incredible and unforgettable experience.

This summer I went to Oregon with my mom to visit my aunt during the 4th of July weekend. My aunt lives on Lake Oswego where she and her fiancé own a boat stationed in this little boat garage in the back of their house. We were only there for about 4 days but we did so much. We thoroughly explored the little town she lived in, stopping at little farmers markets and fruit stands. I also tried out water skiing and tubing on the lake. Finally, on the 4th of July, we took the boat out at night, along with all the other neighbors and it was like a city of boats from where we watched one of the most amazing fireworks shows I’ve ever seen. I can’t wait to go back and visit again!

    Barcelona and Egypt

This was definitely a summer to remember, jam-packed with all sorts of new and tried experiences. Two sisters travelling a foreign European country was exciting all on its own, and with our nouveau-riche status founded upon our travelling funds, we acted accordingly. The attractions in Barcelona never ceased to enthuse and entertain: beautiful beaches filled with beautiful foreigners, incredible seafood, and rows upon rows of fresh fruits and flowers, meats and cheeses within the main market. The street performers were notorious for running distractions for pickpockets, but we took pictures anyways, went shopping nonstop and just enjoyed our time there. Sadly, the fun was limited and our ticket home was non-refundable, so we grudgingly boarded the return flight. But that’s not all; we made full-day stops in Amsterdam during which we explored the city, including Anne Frank’s house and the complex route of canals weaving through the city. Finally, the summer was completed with a month-long trip to Egypt, where we saw mummies and pyramids. About 8 different resorts across the Red Sea shoreline made accommodations for the Youssef family, and even if the major tan won’t last, I know the memories will.

    Rome and Tuscany

I traveled to Rome and Chianti this summer where I had the opportunity to visit some of the most amazing sites Italy has to offer. First I arrived in Rome and walked from the Spanish Steps to the Trevi Fountain to the ancient Roman ruins. Next, I spent a day at Vatican City and climbed to the top of the Basilica where the view was spectacular and well worth the exhausting 550 step climb. I then traveled north to Tuscany where I stayed for a week but went to different hilltop town everyday. One day I went to Florence and the next to Siena, a town famous for its medieval horse race called the Palio, which is when the contrade (neighborhoods who race against each other) pick their horses and jockeys to race. I also visited the nearby towns of Radda, Volterra and San Gimignano where the Italian food was all prepared with completely fresh ingredients and of course utterly delicious. I had a wonderful trip that has sparked my interest in visiting other regions of Italy. ---- Andrea Trinkle, senior
