Quiz Bowl State Champs

For some, Spring Break meant a bit of relaxation time – a well-deserved rest before the last nine weeks or so of school. For Quiz Bowl (QB) members, however, Spring Break meant competing in one of the most competitive tournaments of the season: UCLA’s annual State Championships (State Champs).
On Apr. 3, while most students hit the snooze button repeatedly in celebration of the first Saturday of Spring Break, QB members were up bright and early, waiting for the tournament to begin. As its name implies, State Champs is one of the toughest competitions of the season, with a much larger field of competition of 24 individual teams. For AHS QB members, there was the added pressure of this being the last chance to qualify a second team for the annual High School National Championship Tournament (Nationals), coming up this May.
Although they have already qualified one team for Nationals at a previous tournament this year, QB wanted to carry on the tradition of sending two teams to Nationals, not just one. This would require at least two out of the four AHS teams to place within the top four in the whole tournament, a challenge the whole team rose to meet. “Our strategy was based on splitting up the best people on our team into two teams,” junior Jeff Xiao explained. Instead of sending all their best people on Team A, as it usually does, QB spread the knowledge around to make Team B and Team A equally balanced.
At first, these tactics seemed to be working. After six rounds, Team B remained undefeated while Team A had only lost one game. This placed them both within the top bracket, amongst the top eight teams, and within reach of those coveted four slots. Unfortunately, their luck went downhill after that, so by the end of the day, both teams were tied with 7 wins and 4 losses. This put them in 5th and 6th place – just one off from their goal. “We performed well, though we definitely could have done better,” Jeff commented on Quiz Bowl’s performance. “We didn't succeed in our double-qualification attempt, but we rose up to the challenge of our rivals. We demonstrated that Arcadia can still fight to keep our dreams alive.”
