Obama Proposes Off-Shore Drilling
One of President Barack Obama’s first administration acts was to cancel the long-term offshore drilling plans for oil that the previous president, George W. Bush, created. Now he has changed his mind.
President Obama proposed a new legislation, which is to move drilling towards the Atlantic and Alaskan coastlines, as well as the eastern Gulf of Mexico. These areas have been off-limits for three decades. Under this proposal, the coastline from New Jersey upward and the Pacific Coast, from the Mexico to the Canadian border, would be left untouched. Alaska’s Bristol Bay would also be left untouched because if is environmentally sensitive.
This drilling plan seems to be a way to gain favor from Republicans and moderate Democrats. To gain support from these parties, President Obama called this plan a “part of a broader strategy that will move us from an economy that runs on fossil fuels and foreign oil to one that relies more on homegrown fuels and clean energy.” But what about fellow Arcadians? [Going to insert a quote here]
With the declaration of this legislation, President Obama has received criticism from environmentalists, who accuse the president of exposing marine ecosystems to damage and increasing global warming. Another unfortunate tidbit is that a 2009 analysis by the federal Energy Information Administration suggested that a substantially larger oil plan than this one would only cut gas prices three cents a gallon by 2030. [Going to insert a quote about the gasoline costs]
Administration officials do not consider this plan as leading to anything close to energy independence, but still they think of it as a step forward to a hope of this occurring. Until the results of this plan reveal themselves, the only thing we can do is wait.
