On Apr. 10, Science Olympiad (SO) placed fourth at the State competition, their final competition of the school year. The top 26 science olympiad teams from all over Southern California arrived at Valencia High School to compete, including AHS's biggest competition Troy and North Hollywood High School. However, SO came with a strong mindset; they had met on many occassions during Spring Break to prepare by discussing topics such as the building events and labs. They worked on improving their building events, and fixing any problems they had in the Regionals competition. The competition consisted of written exams, labs, and building events like the regional competition; the only difference was the intensity of the competition since every team competing either placed first or second in their own regions.
Eddie Xue and Jason Jong left the competition with medals around their necks. Brendan Ha and Sam Wang took first in an event called Write It Do It! The SO members were please that they had improved since last year. Alfred Zang exclaimed, "I'm really happy with our win. We are only continuing to improve so I know that next year we'll come back ready to place higher!"
As the year for SO comes to an end, Sophia Chung reminisces, "SO is one of the best experiences I've had in high school. It taught me to appreciate challenges. It was through SO that I learned to appreciate what science has to offer, the uncommon studies that most students don't know about such as ornithology and epidemiology." Their dedication definately paid off. AHS congratulates SO for another successful year!
