The Lion King, as you all know is a popular Disney film that is not only has significant because it follows the hero’s journey and displays various archetypes, but sprouted from our childhood as one of the movies that came out in the year 1994. For sophomores, The Lion King holds this special significance of being a chapter in our lives, the year we came into this world.
But not only was this Disney movie popular, but also Forrest Gump, Star Trek, and The Flintstones. Popular musicians included Phil Collins, Aerosmith, Snoop Dogg, Celine Dion, and the Rolling Stones. While today’s movie ticket costs about $10, during 1994 a movie ticket costs only $4.08, which is almost the same price of our school lunch. The average cost of a new car was $12,350, while a dozen eggs only cost about 86 cents.
However, aside from the costs, the year of 1994 also had some interesting events including OJ Simpson fleeing from court, a tornado in Southeastern United States, and the Winter Olympic Games were held in Lillehammer, Norway. As for technology, the world’s first satellite digital television service launched and the java programming language first released from Sun Microsystems.
Now that we know a little bit more during sophomore year, let’s travel a year back to junior year in 1993. Let’s start off with college, since junior year is the most difficult and hardest years. The tuition to Harvard University was $23,514, while the cost of a new car was $12,750. Movie ticket prices went up by 6 cents and costs $4.14, generally around the same price as the year before.
This year also stands significant because it was the year that Bill Clinton was president of the United States, there was a magnitude 7.8 earthquake in Hokkaido, Japan, and Ty Warner USA launched the first Beanie Babies. It was also the year for popular film, Jurassic Park, Robin Hood, and Sleepless in Seattle. Madonna and Nirvana also were popular artists of the time.
Seniors take it away with more excitement of our past. Because snacks are so important to us like seniors are, let’s head to the category of food. Touching upon the subject of food, a pound of bacon costs $1.92 and a hamburger costs around 60 cents. A 20 ounce pack of Oreo’s was also $1.99.
On the other hand, as to historical events, McDonald’s opened their first restaurant in Beijing, China, Euro Disney opens up in France, and two of the strongest earthquakes strike the desert area east of Los Angeles. Windows 3.1 was also released by Microsoft along with AT&T releasing their first video telephone. Popular television shows include Rugrats, Law and Order, and America’s Funniest Home Videos.
Last but not least, the year of 1995 marks the year of freshmen as well as the yearly inflation rate of 2.81%. The Average cost of a new car was $15,500, while a dozen eggs cost 87 cents. Also during this year, OJ Simpson is found innocent and there is a volcanic eruption in the island of Montserrat. As for technology, Windows 95 is produced and well as the introduction of DVD’s. Popular movies also include Toy Story, Pocahontas, and Jumanji.
The next time you watch Lion King, head to the movies, or even open your history textbook, take a trip down memory lane to a year when you entered the world.
