I still need a few quotes and some basic information, but other than that, it's basically done...
What would you call 19 high school students with abnormally high I.Q. levels and lightning-fast buzzer-slamming reflexes dressed in bright crimson T-shirts with invitations for a date emblazoned across the chest? Well, here in the academic world, we call it Quiz Bowl. Don’t let the shirts fool you – this team has a tradition of being one of the most prolific academic teams on campus, and this year was no exception.
Considering the excellent track record of the team, it’s sometimes hard to believe that more than half the team consists of underclassmen. Regardless of age, to be in Quiz Bowl means to have extensive knowledge of science, history, current events, or literature, as well as knowing the basics of higher mathematics, geography, art, sports and pop culture. The unpredictable nature of the questions presents an added challenge – members can be tested on any random subject under the sun, from ancient Greek civilizations to Justin Bieber songs.
The rules of the game are simple enough. Two opposing teams, typically with four players each, try to be the first to correctly answer a question. Each correct answer earns ten points, while an incorrect answer before the question is finished results in a penalty of five points. Fifteen points is awarded for a question answered correctly within the first line or so, and the objective is to gain the most points within 20 questions.
Last October, in its very first tournament of the year, Quiz Bowl set their own bar higher than ever, placing second overall, losing first place to a tiebreaker round. This also qualified them for the High School National Championship Tournament (Nationals) that will take place in Chicago on May 27. Last year, they sent two teams to Nationals, and placed ___ overall. Although they are only sending one team this year, everybody in Quiz Bowl hopes to do at least as well as last year, if not better.
Tryouts for Quiz Bowl take place early in September of every year. If you want to be a part of this outstanding academic team, make sure to keep an eye on the announcements early next year.
