Math Team
Math team – the name says it all, the academic team that focues solely on the study of various math subjects. Math Team meets every Wednesday afterschool at P2 to practice and study challenging math problems. This year, Math Team participated in the Bay Math League that was held on Mar. 17 and took place in West Torrance High School. Tryouts for Math Team begin early October so be sure to check out the student bulletin. Those who are thinking of trying out are encouraged to have a strong enthusiasm and undying love for math.
Academic Decathlon
Academic Decathlon is nationwide academic team that covers a wide variety of subjects which include art, music, science, economics, speech, language arts, literature, and social science. It was established in 1968, making it one of the oldest and most prestigious academic teams. Seven of the areas are subjective, written tests that include a scantron test with 50 questions to be completed in 30 minutes. Objectives and include essay, interview, and speech. The essay is a one-hour response to a prompt of the contestant's choice. The interview lasts from 5-7 minutes in front of a small group of local parents and teachers who are volunteering. This year, Academic Decathlon competed in a two part French Revolution themed competition on Jan. 30 and Feb. 6. and at the end, received approximately 36 individual medals. Academic Decathlon meets twice a week for about an hour afterschool in F9. Tryouts for Academic Decathlon will be on May 17.
OSB
Ocean Science Bowl (OSB), is a academic team that focuses on subjects such as ocean biography, chemistry, and geography. Our OSB team A consists of only five dedicated members. This year, OSB made it all the way to nationals, which took place in St. Petersburg, Florida and got eighth place. OSB tryouts are on May 21st and the study information is on Advisor, Ms. Chow’s class link website.
Destination Imagination
Destination Imagination (DI) is the academic team that isn’t about math or science, but instead – one’s creativeness and ingenuity. This team specializes in performance challenges, with topics ranging from science, construction and history, to art, music, drama, and modern social issues. There was one team that attended the regional competition, got first place, and moved onto State champs. Applications will be out early October next year, so be sure to check the bulletin!
Speech and Debate
This year, Speech and Debate competed in their usual League competitions which included Icebreakers, Fall and Spring Novice, Spring Varsity etc. There were four semi-finalists at State Champs - Nancy Xiao, Ray Chao, Michelle Zhu, and Virginia Ma. In the end, Ray qualified to finals and won first place. In addition to other individual awards, Speech and Debate won third in sweepstakes at Fall Varsity and second at Spring Varsity.
Constitution team
Constitution team, more commonly known as Gov Team, has had a very successful year. For the first time in fifteen years, Gov team has won the national “We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution” competition. The team is composed of thirty seniors who are taking the AP Government class.
Quiz Bowl
Quiz Bowl (QB), is an academic team that competes in trivia-based, jeopardy-styled competitions. The team had qualified for the national competition at the first meet at UCLAS back in October. QB has since been strengthening the team and is looking forward to the national competition Memorial weekend. Tryouts for QB 2010-2011 will be done late September of next year.
Science Olympiad
Science Olympiad is a team that tests in various subjects of science and building events. The team had won second at regionals and fourth in nationals. There will be a optional info meeting in E8 May 27 for a SO session over the summer, but general tryouts for the next SO team will be in late September of the next school year.
Science Bowl
Science Bowl is an academic team that trains for jeopardy styled competitions based on general scientific material. The team had placed first in regionals at JPL against such school as Troy and Santa Monica. There will be an informational meeting at lunch May 14 and tryouts May 27.
Physics Team
This academic team had been new founded by juniors Vincent Li and Daniel Liem. Since its creation, the team had recruited 16 members and gone to the Physics Bowl Qualifying Test Competition. Also, Captain Vincent Li had qualified for the National Physics Olympiad competition and will be going to D.C. this summer. Tryouts for next year will be held at the beginning of next year and is open to anyone with a vast knowledge of Physics.
