    Poetry Slam & Open Mic
    By: Justin Park

The Poetry Slam & Open Mic, held to encourage the imagination, creativity, and artistic talents of its attendees, took place April 23 at the Arcadia Public Library. Five panelists from the Nuevin Foundation—a nonprofit organization—judged the students based on performance, content, and creativity. The range of students accepted were from middle school students to high school students throughout the San Gabriel Valley.

The basic main idea was to promote an artistic community in children who were able to spread their talents in different environments other than school. The Poetry Slam & Open Mic event also held not only a poetry competition, but a performing arts competition as well. The topics and performances varied from poems about childhood memories to singing duets and blaring trumpet solos. Heather Cousin, children's services supervisor said, "It gives them the opportunity to do something creative just for their own enjoyment and to be in another environment outside of school."

According to the judges, the quality of the poems were high and allowed the judges plentiful amounts of good material to consider. In the event, there were four categories that separated the contestants: High School Poetry and Performance, and Middle School Poetry and Performance.

(not much on the actual events itself, can get quotes from AHS students who attended the event to fill up the rest of the article NOTE: one of the contestants was Joanna Chuang, can i get a quote from her disregarding fact shes in powwow?)

The Poetry Slam & Open Mic, held to encourage the imagination, creativity, and artistic talents of its attendees, took place April 23 [on Apr. 23] at the Arcadia Public Library. Five panelists from the Nuevin Foundation—a nonprofit organization—judged the students based on performance, content, and creativity. The range of students accepted were from middle school students to high school students throughout the San Gabriel Valley.

The basic main [choose one of these words] idea [purpose of the event] was to promote an artistic community in children who were able to spread their talents in different environments other than [outside of] school. The Poetry Slam & Open Mic event also held not only a poetry competition, but a performing arts competition as well. The topics and performances varied from poems about childhood memories to singing duets and blaring trumpet solos. Heather Cousin, children's services supervisor [insert comma] said, "It gives them the opportunity to do something creative just for their own enjoyment and to be in another environment outside of school."

According to the judges, the quality of the poems were high [LOL sounds a bit awkward] and allowed the judges plentiful amounts of good material to consider. In the event, there were four categories that separated the contestants: High School Poetry and Performance, and Middle School Poetry and Performance.

(not much on the actual events itself, can get quotes from AHS students who attended the event to fill up the rest of the article NOTE: one of the contestants was Joanna Chuang, can i get a quote from her disregarding fact shes in powwow?) YEAH TOTALLY YAY What did Joanna do?
