Drive Out Hunger Tour Empty Drive Out Hunger Tour

Let’s Fight Hunger (still working on a title)
by Raphael Lu and Evan Delgado
On August 31st, 2009, The Drive Out Hunger Tour launched it’s 30 day drive across the United States to collect soup cans for people in need over the span of 1 month.
On the day that the employees set out on their “drive against hunger” a large kick off ceremony was thrown in their honor. Attending the ceremony, was David Arquette, various executes from the Cheesecake Factory, and Tamar Kaprelian, who’s hit single “New Day”, will serve as the tour anthem. On September 1, 2009, hundreds of people in and around Arcadia flocked to the Santa Anita mall’s Cheesecake factory to donate cans of soup to the great cause as the Drive Out Hunger Tour arrived at its first city. After the day had ended the van set out to hit the next 29 stops on their tour against hunger by collecting canned goods from different cities around the nation, one for everyday of the month. The road trip will stop on the 30th in Washington D.C. To encourage donations the first 500 people to donate 2 cans at each city were giving slice of Red velvet Cheesecake.
Some people may ask why we are having this food drive. “We are in America; doesn’t everyone get enough to eat?” asks senior student Andrew Taylor. Well, unfortunately 1 out of 8 Americans are at the present time. Many people are unaware of the hunger near them because they are constantly surrounded by luxury and the philosophy that the hardworking should always be able to support themselves. The economic crisis has caused many to become unemployed or simply unable to afford decent meals after a week of dealing with sky high mortgages and a flood of bills. In fact hunger in Arcadia is completely unheard of. It’s a tragedy how few know and acknowledge the suffering of Americans out there.
You may feel empathy for the American people and their hardships, but did you know that you can help? At any time you can by a slice of Stefanie’s Ultimate Red Velvet Cheesecake, and the restaurant will donate 25 cents to the cause. The van’s departure has left some people wondering if it is too late to help, but people still have the opportunity. Also, on September 30th, the last day of the tour, people can bring two cans of soup to any of the restaurants, and have 10 percent of their checks donated to the local food bank. All it takes is a bit of time and effort to profoundly affect the lives of others.
As the determined employees drive thousands of miles and people chip in on a great effort to help individuals in need, the brightest parts of human nature are shown. So many people have helped out in this drive against hunger that is has ceased to be a simple fundraiser but become a country wide effort by everyday people. We in Arcadia who have three full meals per day should be grateful of the luxuries we have. So the next time you plan to get an extra slice of pizza, ask yourself, will I really finish this, or will I get eat half and throw the rest away?
