Mrs. Kovacic receives Teacher of the Year Award
By Evan Delgado
Early in November, the California state superintendent, Jack O’Connell, announced the five recipients of the Teacher of the Year Award. Mrs. Kelly Kocacic, social studies teacher and AHS graduate, was one of those recipients. Mrs. Kovacic was also nominated for the prestigious National Teacher of the Year Award. The inspiring teacher is the daughter of Councilman Gary Kovacic and graduated from our very own AHS. Mrs. Kovacic teaches 11th and 12th grade social studies at the Preuss School, a low income, preparatory institution UC San Diego. “quote.” Mrs. Kovacic first served as a volunteer at the Preuss School while she was attending classes as an undergraduate at UC San Diego, proving her dedication to education and her early aspirations to influence the lives of others. She graduated from UCSD in 2000, and since receiving a Master of Arts degree in education from Stanford University has taught at the Pruess School for seven years. Many of the students are the first to attend college in their perspective families. Her Kovacic dedicates her time and energy towards her students, who she sees as “future leaders.” Mr. Kovacic was delighted over his daughter’s success, stating, “[We have] overwhelming pride in our daughter and her many accomplishments. She chose a profession that is not high-paying because she truly believes in the power of education and the role it can play in improving the lives of her students.”
As California’s economy began to deteriorate, the first thing that was cut was education. Mrs. Kovacic voiced her dissent to this when she said that, “quote.” She also expressed her opinion that money would be better spent on school systems rather than prisons. Should I keep this? Just need Mrs. Kovacic to respond .
