katherinebay Mon May 10, 2010 10:42 pm“Second round and beyond” is the goal that is embedded into each member of the Girls Varsity Softball team as they battle each and every game this season in an attempt to go even further in CIF than the previous teams have. Their goals are set high and the team has the matching attitude and motivation to back it up. “Our team is made up of really different types of people, but it's really cool how we all come together for one common goal: to win and have fun,” said junior Angie Possemato.
Hoping to bring the same positive outlook to their first game against Temple City, the team started off a bit on the shaky side. On Mar. 5, their drive and enthusiasm was not embedded into their mindset the day of the game, perhaps because of their first game jitters or worries. Although Temple City was a tough competitor, the team pulled off two points, ending their game at 2-8. While looking on the bright side, the members of the team came to a consensus that their score was merely a test of their wit, if you will, and that they will definitely win the next one. Captain senior Emily McQuaid said, “I believe this year we have the tightest knit group of girls. We realize we are one team, and we win and lose together.”
The next day, the team reminisced their mistakes made from their last game, fixed them, and brought their improvements to their game against Baldwin Park. Their vibe was back on track as they walked onto our own field with a fresh start. All of the girls anticipated for the worst, as each and every one of them gave it their absolute all. The team made hit after hit and bounced back strong. Junior Blaire Barchman commented, “We are already focusing on our weak spots and fixing them. Our hitting is already strong, so if we keep working on defense I think we will do well in league.” With that said, the team won 20-2, which is an amazing turn around from the day before.
On Mar. 9, the team played against La Cañada, attempting to bring their successful streak to their neck of the woods. As the intensity of the game reached its maximum point, the team proved to both the opposing team and the audience that they are capable of competing with the best teams in the area. The game became really close, but La Cañada beat the team by just a smidge, ending the game with a loss of 0-1. Rosemead was their next competitor the following day. In the beginning of the game, their odds weren’t looking so well as they slowly descended into failure. Their determination and teamwork was the glue to their success as they made an amazing comeback in the later innings winning the game 7-3. Their victory couldn’t have been accomplished without freshman MacKenzie Grimes and her amazing pitching abilities. Coach Megan Leahy commented, "We have a very young team. They like to listen to music while they warm up."
The team had a home game against Marshall on Mar. 12, where their triumphant winning sensation continued to exist. It was a tight game, but the team won yet another game with a score of 5-4. When Monrovia was their next opponent, the team was beaten by a sliver, losing 2-3. Soon after, the team traveled to Maranatha’s turf and lost 3-4. Their next home game was against Hoover, which was their first game of league, where they won 5-4. Afterwards, the team lost against Burroughs 0-3, won against Muir 13-0, and then won against Glendale 4-1. La Salle was their next opponent, where they won 9-7. The team then won their next game against Pasadena 19-2, lost their next two games against Burbank and Burroughs, and then won their next two games against Pasadena and Muir. Their winning streak continued as they beat Hoover 3-0, but soon ended when they lost 1-15 against Burbank. Their inconsistency is unbelievable as the team continues to swing from win to loss, as if they were riding on a seesaw, and has an overall score of 11-3 and 8-4 for league.
