The Spirit of Counseling Resides in Sandaval
By: Justin Park
The spirit of aspiring to achieve the best of the best is strong in Arcadia with many of our students being granted entryway into world-renowned universities and, let us not forget, our excellent counselors who assist the students to push their ability to their fullest potential. This year, Arcadia High School's very own senior counselor, Sharon Sandaval, received the prominent Donald G. Hays Counselor of the Year award.
Sandaval absolutely commits to her job and sympathizes with the students she counsels. "Helping students realize their goals is very satisfying but it is equally gratifying to help disheartened students recognize their true potential!" said Sandaval. Students occasionally need a remedy to their depressing stages in academic life because it's never going to be perfect and easygoing on students. Especially the seniors experience the most hammering stress waves because of all the worrying needed. Seniors have to think: applications, universities, extracurricular activities, SAT's, ACT's, grades, leadership positions, and independence. "Students present to the counseling office with significantly varying degrees of pain. One student may be experiencing anxiety because he cannot decide between two college prep electives, another is afraid that she may not have enough credit to graduate and still another is grieving over the loss of a loved one." said Sandaval. Many submit to the overwhelming workload, however, the counselors always break the fall. Experienced and notable counselors like Sandaval push the students back on their feet and give them a pep talk to motivate the students to never, ever give up.
The Donald G. Hays Counselor of the Year award is a distinguished honor certificate that commemorates the grantee for their exceptional performance and enthusiastically agreeing with a student support program and supporting and believing in the students. This attitude in counseling embodies the spirit of Donald G. Hays. Hays was a counselor for about 40 years and designed the foundations of the ASCA (American School Counselor Association) National Standards. Hays is the current optimum figure and role model in the counseling occupation.
Sandaval, without a doubt, earned the Donal G. Hays Counselor of the Year award through amazing patronage and assistance over a broad variety of areas. "I believe in education and I believe in alleviating the pain of others." Sandaval stated. Sharon Sandaval truly deserves this valuable award along with a large applause from all the students at AHS.
