Speech and Debate Article (Shadow)
If you could have any skill in the world, what would you pick? The superpower of being able to argue fantastically well, perhaps? To be able to stun your enemies, your friends, your parents into an amazed silence while you show them exactly how they are wrong and you are right – now who wouldn’t want that? Well, some of the more fortunate people at AHS already have that power – the kids of Speech and Debate! These are the people who have a witty retort for every little remark you make, and they showcased their stupendous speaking ability at Spring Debate on Jan. 8-9 at Arroyo High.
As the name implies, Spring Debate is comprised of only debating events, the second of two competitions throughout the year to do so. The competition offers Speech and Debate members a refreshing change from the usual Individual Events of regular tournaments before Spring Varsity later this month. At Spring Debate, speakers had a choice ranging from the more casual Parliamentary Debate, to the complicated moral battles of Lincoln-Douglas Debate and everything in between. Parliamentary Debates were by far the most popular, with ___ teams of two speakers each from AHS alone. “Quote about how fun parli is”, said Someone Whodidparli.
The tournament was divided into two days, Friday and Saturday, with the novices competing on Friday, and the varsity members as well as Congress debaters taking their turn on Saturday. In the hopes of speeding things up on Friday, the novices received their debating topics at least a day beforehand, even for Parliamentary Debate, where speakers are supposed to only have 20 minutes to prepare before their speech. Although this did shorten the competition somewhat, our dedicated debaters were still at Arroyo until well after nightfall, reaching home at about __. The varsity members, however, began early Saturday morning at 7:30 p.m. and finished at about __ after watching the awards ceremony (and if we have dinner, I’ll add it in)
__ speakers from AHS won trophies at Spring Debate, in __ different events. Congratulations to everyone who went, and remember – use your debating powers for good, not evil!
