Salutatorians and Valedictorian for the class of 2010
Every year at graduation, select seniors are honored for their outstanding academic achievements at AHS. This year, 30 seniors were nominated to become class Salutatorians and will represent the graduating class of 2010 at the Commencement Ceremony. On Apr. 29, Principal Mr. David Vannasdall, Assistant Principal Mr. Craig Wiblemo, and several other faculty members assembled the Salutatorians in C-1 to congratulate them for their academic achievements and encourage them to apply for class Valedictorian.
All Salutatorians had to achieve a cumulative unweighted GPA of 3.95 or higher and receive no marks of “U” and no more than two marks of “N” in citizenship to receive this honor. In addition, they had to maintain satisfactory disciplinary and school attendance records, as deemed by the Valedictorian Selection Committee. Next, to be considered for class Valedictorian, Salutatorians had to complete a detailed Valedictorian application to be reviewed by the committee. The application packet included questions about school activities, off campus activities, awards and honors, hobbies and interests, work experience, as well as an essay. "We look for a student who is outstanding in all aspects," Mr. Wiblemo explained.
The Valedictorian Selection Committee, consisting of one administrator, the two senior counselors, five or six volunteer teachers from different subject areas, and two graduating seniors, selected the Valedictorian from among the many qualified candidates using a fair, rigorous, and holistic process. In addition to reviewing the written applications, the committee also considered students’ transcripts, attendance, and behavior records.
“Selecting the Valedictorian is a tough, but rewarding process for committee members,” proclaimed Mr. Wiblemo. “AHS has so many outstanding students; it's extremely difficult to find one student to represent the graduating class as the class Valedictorian. I think, however, that the holistic process we have had in place for more than a decade does an excellent job…our process is not unlike the process that our nation's most highly selective colleges and universities use for selecting their students.”
Congratulations to the Salutatorians for the class of 2010! The Valedictorian was announced at the Senior Assembly today, May 28, and will speak at Commencement Ceremony on June 11 at the Santa Anita Race Track.
