Of the many things that can be said about Washington University in St. Louis, that its admissions office does not try hard enough cannot be one of them. The amount of pamphlets and postcards that it sends to students year-round is quite remarkable and frankly, frightening. Way to be environmentally friendly.
In all seriousness, Washington University in St. Louis (or Wash U for short), is recognized not just for its spam, but because it is one of the country’s best and most prominent institutions of higher learning.
Established in 1853 and located in -- as its name suggests -- St. Louis, Missouri, this private university has long been considered a Midwestern backup school. In recent years, however, the number of applications has spiked while acceptance rates dwindled.
The prestigious pre-medical program attracts thousands of aspiring doctors to apply every year, but Wash U is not a one-trick pony. Besides biology and natural sciences, the school also boasts strong departments in psychology, foreign languages, English, political science, and accounting. Students are also known to engage in interdisciplinary study, with 60% of students either declaring multiple majors or a major and a minor.
Perhaps the most unique aspect for this campus – traditionally known for being science-oriented – is the students’ keen interest and involvement in politics. Case in point: Wash U has hosted debates in the past five presidential elections, including the 2008 vice-presidential debate between Joe Biden and Sarah Palin. There are also multiple organizations such as STAR (Students Together Against Racism) and ADHOC (Against Discrimination and Hatred on Campus) which keep students engaged.
Outside of academics and politics, there are plenty of ways that Wash U students keep themselves occupied. Practically adjacent to the school are a golf course, an ice-skating rink, a zoo, a lake which allows students to rent boats, museums, an outdoor theater, and a science center. On-campus events include the Thurtene Carnival, the largest student-run carnival in the country, and annual celebrations marking Diwali, an Indian festival.
Wash U turns away four out five applicants every year. The tuition – like that of most private schools – is expensive, but almost half of all students receive some sort of financial aid.

    SAT Scores
    Critical Reading: 680-750
    Math: 710-780
    Writing: n/a
    Acceptance rate: 21.7%
    In-state tuition: $38,864
    Out-of-state tuition: $38,864
