Speech and Debate - Fall Novice Empty Speech and Debate - Fall Novice

Post  oisheeshemontee Sun Nov 08, 2009 8:46 pm

Still need to interview some people for quotes after competition.

There’s a lot to talk about when members of this team are around! Speech and Debate used their oratorical skills to their advantage last Saturday, Nov. 21, at the annual Fall Novice tournament at Gabrielino High School.
Their campus was filled with flashes of ______ as the team - probably the second-largest in the division, after Gabrielino themselves - battled on through the day, starting at around 8:00 a.m. and ending _______. Although
s the predecessor of Fall Varsity, a more intense competition that usually takes place mid-December, Fall Novice merely gave competitors a taste of what is yet to come. Not only were speakers divided up by the type of speech, they were also put into two groups - novice and varsity, based on their amount of previous experience, to even up the playing field a little more. This distinction will not be present at Fall Varsity later this year, when novice members will have a chance to compete head-to-head against speakers with more than a year’s worth of experience.
“Quote on expectations of a novice member”, said _______. The varsity members share similar feelings, as _____ showed when s/he commented, “___________”. This confidence, typical of most team members, is an attitude amply justified by belonging to a team that retains their high level of achievement year after year after year.
As predicted, Speech and Debate dominated the competition in both novice and varsity, bringing home ___ trophies in _____ events. Adviser Mrs. Josipa Casey proudly states, “something along the lines of how proud she is.”

Speech and Debate - Fall Novice Empty Re: Speech and Debate - Fall Novice

Post  oisheeshemontee Sun Nov 22, 2009 5:59 pm

Still need some quotes and results:

There’s a lot to talk about when members of this team are around! Speech and Debate used their oratorical skills to their advantage on Nov. 21, at the annual Fall Novice tournament at Gabrielino High School.
As the predecessor of Fall Varsity, a more intense competition taking place on Dec. 12 this year, Fall Novice merely gave competitors a taste of what is yet to come. Not only were speakers divided up by the type of speech, they were also categorized into novice and junior varsity, based on their amount of previous experience in order to even up the playing field for the newer competitors. Varsity members were only allowed to judge. This distinction will not be present at Fall Varsity later this year, when novice members will compete head-to-head against both JV and varsity speakers, with more than a year’s worth of experience.
Last Saturday, Gabrielino’s campus was filled with the distinctive dark chocolate jackets worn by AHS orators, as the team - probably the second-largest in the division, after Gabrielino themselves - battled on through the day. About 73 competitors attended from AHS alone, participating in 19 different events, ranging from the more emotionally involved Interpretation events to the serious policies and laws discussed in Foreign Extemporaneous speeches. “I wasn’t too nervous, but I was a bit because I had only just finished memorizing my [Dramatic Interpretation] piece the previous night”, laughed novice member sophomore Tricia Lin.
People with A-Round events such as Original Advocacy, Humorous Interpretation and Impromptu started off the competition at around 8:00 a.m., ending three rounds later at about 12:00 p.m. As soon as they finished, B-Round began, including favorites like Duo Interpretation and Dramatic Interpretation, among others. After they were done with their rounds, many A-Round competitors chose to drop in and watch their B-Round teammates, who had done their share of observing in the morning. “It was fun watching the novices in their first tournament of the year”, commented JV member junior Peter Yang.
While waiting for the awards ceremony to begin, all the members of Speech and Debate took part in an ancient team ritual – a giant game of Ride That Pony, a team bonding event that never fails to bring AHS rhetoricians closer while casting envy into the hearts of the other teams.
Although the awards were surprisingly dominated by Gabrielino wins, AHS fared passably well, bringing home two gold trophies. Sophomore Nancy Xiao won first place in the category of novice Original Advocacy, while the sophomore pair Amit Akula and Amy Wen swept away their competition in JV Duo Interpretation. “It feels great to be recognized for the hard work you put in”, smiled Nancy Xiao.
The top ten percent in any one event also received superiority trophies, while the top twenty percent received excellence trophies. There were over ___ AHS recipients, in both novice and JV, showing that even if they didn’t beat Gabrielino, they came extremely close.
Perhaps the best quality of Speech and Debate is the almost-family-like atmosphere surrounding all the events. After the competition ended, many members decided to dine out together at Claim Jumper’s, to end the day with a celebration. “I felt it was a great way for the novices to see what the competition is like before Fall Varsity and it was a great way for all of us to bond”, said varsity member Stephennie Teng happily.
