Arcadia has a reputation for being one of the safest cities around. However, even the safest cities have their defenses penetrated from time to time. That’s why the string of crimes committed over the past few months reminded Arcadians that safety is not something to take for granted.

The first crime occurred on Nov. 29, 2009, when a family of three was bound during a home-invasion robbery carried out by three men. Four days later, two robbers described as teenagers attacked, robbed and attempted to tie up a couple in front of their home. In late January, robberies were carried out at Arcadia’s 99 Ranch Market. On three separate occasions, three women were robbed while walking across the market’s parking lot. On Mar. 3, three men who attacked, robbed and carjacked a mother and son in front of their home. The pair had been collecting rent from their properties. The criminals escaped with the SUV, the woman's purse, and cash and personal checks in substantial amounts. However, the Arcadia Police Department believes that the crimes aren’t related.

At “Don’t Be a Victim,” a community meeting held as a result of the recent crimes, Arcadia Police Chief Robert Sanderson and Sergeant Brian Ortiz addressed residents and responded to questions. They encouraged Arcadians to go with their instincts and not to hesitate to call the police. Chief Sanderson also warned residents that a state plan developed to cope with budget problems will release tens of thousands of convicted felons from prison over the next several years. This could greatly impact local crime trends as Los Angeles County sees "more criminals on the streets."

For interested residents, the department has recently set up a new public information blog, arcadiapolice.blogspot.com, and uses Nixle.com to send out crime alerts. Freshman James Ho believes “the robberies made Arcadians realize the [importance] of safety.” As Arcadians, we can look out for each other, report any suspicious activities, and keep in mind that safety doesn’t come without effort.
