Arcadia High’s academic teams never cease to study ardently with a fierce determination to surpass the prominent rankings from preceding years. As the school year begins and an eager assemblage of students is ready to join, the teams set out to add more honors to Arcadia’s already prestigious name.

    Ocean Science Bowl
Ocean Science Bowl is based on a jeopardy style competition, much like Science Bowl and Quiz Bowl, where the focus is solely oceanography such as ocean biography, chemistry, and geography. OSB members meet every Friday in E-8 to study ocean-related textbooks for the regional competition in March. Jason Jong, captain of Ocean Science Bowl, proudly states, “OSB consists of members who are willing to sail the high seas in search of ocean knowledge.” Jason simply wants members who are truly passionate about science because they tend to do the best on the team. Unfortunately, tryouts are finished for this year but they will be open again in June for the next school year.

    Math Team
The Math Team is the only academic team in Arcadia High School that focuses on the subject of math. Members are encouraged to attend the lunch group “Math Enthusiasts” in addition to mandatory practice sections on Wednesdays afterschool in P2. The Math Team meets weekly to prepare for their first meet in the Bay Math League in November. Tryouts for the Math Team will be available during the beginning of October so keep a lookout in the bulletin. All students are encouraged to tryout since they cover all math subjects from 9th to 12th grade.

    Destination imagination
This academic team involves mental creativity and complexity of thought. To place in regional competitions the team must perform challenges and tasks through different medias of creativity that revolve around subjects such as science, construction, art, music, drama, history, and modern social issues.

    Constitution Team
The Constitution Team’s practice and training is long and tedious and committed to history, economics, and social studies. This is only open to incoming seniors with substantial qualifications in AP, honors, or regular US History. This is also followed up with a thorough tryout process that includes an application and interview. The Constitution Team’s members also invest much of their time- nearly 6 hours a day. As competition nears, training can take up to 20 hours a week.

    Academic Decathlon
The Academic Decathlon of Arcadia High School is a challenging intellectual competition. Tryouts will last until November the only requirement being the time and will to work for and commit to the team. It covers a wide spread of subjects including art, music, science, economics, speech, language arts, literature, and social science. This year, Academic Decathlon is focusing on the French Revolution and the art and music of the time period. During the last week of January and the first week of February, the team will be attending a regional competition. Alison Hsieh, captain of the Academic Decathlon, stated that she enjoyed, “Being able to be so well-rounded, we study from ten different subject areas, and are able to handle different things and apply ourselves to the best of our ability.”

    Science Olympiad
Science Olympiad allows its members to explore a wide variety of science ranging from herpetology to forensics and put their knowledge to the test by battling written tests, performing labs, and engineering. They meet to discuss difficult topics and do practice tests in E-8 on Thursdays from 3-5 and Saturdays from 9-11 in the morning; their dedication and time commitment are essential to their success as a team. SO consists of 25 to 30 disciplined and studious members all striving to be one of the 18 that go to competition. As the largest science team on campus, these close but competitive members find motivation through competition. SO is looking for members to bring them to Nationals so tryouts are available for anyone with an interest in science during the week of October 5th.

The Quiz Bowl team at Arcadia High School competes with a variety of subjects in a Jeopardy-type fashion. The team is still holding tryouts with an informational meeting September 8th in P6 with its new advisor Mr. Schultz. The team enters tournaments hosted by various high schools and colleges where the top fifteen percent place in the nationals such as the High School National Championship Tournament or the National Scholastics Championships. Last year, the team tied for 27th place in the HSNCT. During the meetings, Quiz Bowl discusses tournaments, go over practice questions, and have subject meetings where they focus on each topic (ex. science, social science, and literature.) When asked what makes Quiz Bowl unique, the tournament director stated, “Our team unity. Even though we’re bigger than a lot of teams, everyone knows everyone and everyone is everyone else’s friend. We know each other’s strengths and weaknesses which makes us stronger.

    Speech and Debate
Speech and Debate just recently participated in the Ice Breaker competition on September 19th. Just as the competition entitles, the purpose of the Ice Breaker competition was to help “break the ice” and unify the members. The novice members were able to participate in competitions such as impromptu, radio interviews, and character debates to explore their interests in Speech and Debate. These even

    Science Bowl
Science Bowl consists of quick-thinkers that participate in group competitions in all subjects science. They have meetings every week in E-8 to have friendly competitions and discussions.

Post  Joanna Shen Mon Sep 21, 2009 11:32 am

cadia High’s academic teams never cease to study ardently with a fierce determination to surpass the prominent rankings from preceding years. As the school year begins and an eager assemblage of students is ready to join, the teams set out to add more honors to Arcadia’s already prestigious name.

    Ocean Science Bowl
Ocean Science Bowl (OSB) is based on a jeopardy style competition, much like Science Bowl and Quiz Bowl, where the focus is solely oceanography such as ocean biography, chemistry, and geography. OSB members meet every Friday in E-8 to study ocean-related textbooks for the regional competition in March. Jason Jong, captain of Ocean Science Bowl, proudly stated, “OSB consists of members who are willing to sail the high seas in search of ocean knowledge.” Jason wants members who are truly passionate about science and work with the best interests of the team in mind. The Ocean Science Bowl team has already been determined this year and is preparing for regional competitions. However tryouts will be available in June for the next school year.

    Math Team
The Math Team is the only academic team on campus where students come together to share their interests and talents in mathematics. Members attend mandatory practice sessions every Wednesday after school in P-2 to prepare for their first meet in the Bay Math League in November. Their busy schedule doesn’t stop after the four competitions in the Bay Math League, but continues with Math Day at the Beach at Cal State Long Beach. Tryouts for the Math Team, which is a 2-hour after school exam, will be available during the beginning of October so keep a lookout in the bulletin. All students are encouraged to tryout since they cover all math subjects from 9th to 12th grade.

    Destination Imagination
Destination Imagination (DI) is comprised of groups of 7 imaginative students with a knack for creative thinking. The time commitment for DI fluctuates with each team’s dedication, but group meetings are usually scheduled after school to prepare for the regional competition in spring. To place in regional competitions, the team must perform challenges through different means of creativity, which revolve around subjects such as construction, art, music, drama, and modern social issues.

    Constitution Team
The Constitution Team is a year long AP Government class advised by Mr. Kevin Fox that studies the US Constitution and government. This class is open to incoming seniors with substantial qualifications in regular, honors, or advanced placement US History. This is also followed up with a thorough tryout process that includes an application and interview. The Constitution Team spends class time preparing for Chambers and regionals competition in December.

    Academic Decathlon
The Academic Decathlon of Arcadia High School is a challenging intellectual competition. Tryouts last until November and the only requirement being the time and will to work for and commit to the team. The team covers a wide spread of subjects including art, music, science, economics, speech, language arts, literature, and social science. Academic Decathlon chose to focus on the French Revolution this year, which includes learning the art and music of the time period. During the last week of January and the first week of February, the team will be attending a regional competition. Alison Hsieh, captain of Academic Decathlon, stated that she enjoyed, “Being able to be so well-rounded; we study from ten different subject areas and are able to handle different things and apply ourselves to the best of our ability.”

    Science Olympiad
Science Olympiad (SO) allows its members to explore a wide variety of science ranging from herpetology to forensics and put their knowledge to the test by matching their wits against written tests, labs, and engineering. They meet to discuss difficult topics and do practice tests in E-8 on Thursdays from 3-5 [3:00 p.m - 5:00 p.m] and Saturdays from 9-11 [9:00 a.m - 11:00 a.m] in the morning; their [delete] dedication and time commitment are essential to their success as a team. SO consists of 25 to 30 disciplined and studious members all striving to be one of the 18 that go to tournaments against various high schools. As the largest science team on campus, these close but competitive members [misplaced modifier; rephrase. The members are not the largest science team on campus, SO is] find motivation through competition. SO is looking for members to bring them to Nationals so tryouts are available starting October 5th [Oct. 5] open to anyone with an interest in science. The advisor [adviser] for Science Olympiad, Mrs. Mynster stated that the teams [more than one?] are “really fun to join- it’s a lot of team building involved and friendships that grow [through] the process of learning science.”

    Quiz Bowl
Quiz Bowl had an informational meeting on September 8th [Sept. 8]. The team has now been determined after an extensive hour-long tryout process held afterschool [two words] on September 14th [Sept. 14]. The team meets on a weekly basis in P-6 to discuss tournaments and go over practice questions where they cover a variety of topics ranging from social science to literature. The team enters tournaments hosted by various high schools and colleges where the top fifteen percent [15%] place in the nationals such as the High School National Championship Tournament [add(HSNCT)][color=red] or the National Scholastics Championships. Last year, the team tied for 27th place in the HSNCT. The tournament director of Quiz Bowl, Alex Wang appreciates Quiz Bowl for its team unity[color=red]: [comma] "Even though we’re bigger than a lot of teams, everyone knows everyone and is everyone else’s friend. We know each other’s strengths and weaknesses which makes us stronger."

    Speech and Debate
Speech and Debate just recently participated in the Ice Breaker competition on Saturday[,] September 19th [Sept. 19]. Just as the competition entitles, the purpose of the Ice Breaker competition was to help “break the ice” and unify the members. The novice members were able to participate in competitions such as impromptu, radio interviews, and character debates to explore their interests in Speech and Debate. This event allowed novice members to feel comfortable performing and debating against other high schools. From here, members start to specialize in specific ares such as Thematic Interpretation, Original Advocacy, Humor Interpretation, and Team Debates.
